VILLAGE SILVERSMITH

Celebrating the unique natural beauty of the earth's most incredible stones, mounted in fine one-of-a-kind handmade sterling silver settings.

Village Silversmith is a family owned and operated business based in the historic seaside village of Rockport, MA. that began with the life-long interest in minerals of founder George Bajoras. While in the military he was able to apprentice under master stone cutters of Idar-Oberstein, Germany, a skill that became a jewelry business once he started fashioning settings for the beautiful stones he was cutting. Thirty years of selling his jewelry throughout the Northeast lead to the opening of the first retail shop in picturesque Rockport, Massachusetts. When son John Bajoras joined the business full time, after graduating from college and studying silversmithing with a number of talented craftsmen, we added a second location at Dock Square in Rockport which is now managed by his sister Sara. As the business has grown, we have added three more retail stores; one on Bearskin Neck in Rockport, where our workshop is located, our conveniently located store on Main St. in Gloucester, and our newest and largest retail location in the Northshore Mall, Peabody, MA.

We have recently begun mining a claim in northern Mexico that is producing a distinctive multicolored banded agate we have named Sierra Madre agate (Featured in the November '06 Lapidary Journal), as well as other fine rough material for cutting. We are also fortunate to be able to purchase other unusual stones that are being mined in the region in micro-batch quantities too small to reach the major markets. Rough and cabbed stones are available through our subsidiary, Sierra Madre Mining Company, at gem and mineral shows throughout the country, and jewelry featuring these stones is available at our retail stores.

In addition to collections of the exotic stone jewelry we create, each of our retail locations offers extensive selections of sterling silver and gemstone and silver earrings (over 1000 different pairs in each store), gemstone bead necklaces which are designed and crafted in our Rockport studio, the most extensive selection of sterling silver chains and silver charms available anywhere in the Northeast, and an equally broad selection of silver link and cuff style bracelets. The Gloucester, Bearskin Neck and Peabody, MA locations also offer large selections of gem and crystal specimens, as well as an assortment of rare fossil specimens in a wide range of sizes and prices.

Specialties
Our specialty is the use of the finest and most beautiful colored hardstones, many of them so rare they are found in only one location on earth, mounted in finely hand crafted nickel free sterling silver settings in a variety of designs and styles. As the stones we use are cut to maximize the natural beauty of each individual stone, each piece we create is unique, with the setting crafted for each individual stone. Our hand made settings cover a range of styles from the simplest bezel mounting, to more elaborate styles based on the floral designs of the American Arts & Crafts movement, and our line of nautical themed settings that incorporate starfish, sand dollars and sea turtles into the designs.

Most of the stones we use are rarely if ever found in the traditional jewelry trade. Unusual agates and jaspers from around the world include ocean jasper, imperial jasper, brightly colored Laguna agate and the mottled earth tones of Montana moss agate. All are selected for their exceptional patterns and colors. Rare Russian gems include deep red eudialyte, the shimmering purple of charoite, and the rich chatoyant greens of seraphinite. We offer an extensive selection of beautiful turquoise from around the world, and among the more distinctive stones we use are the fossilized ones, including fossilized dinosaur bone in a variety of colors, fossilized coral with its lovely starburst pattering, and turtella agate with tiny spiral shells fossilized into stone. We also set fine fossil specimens in jewelry including examples of Ammonites, Orthoceras, and beautiful fossil sand dollars. In addition to the unusual gems we have become known for, we also cut and mount all of the more traditional stones such as lapis lazuli and malachite.

Two stones we are particularly well known for are amber and larimar. Our selection of Baltic amber beads, pendants, earrings and other pieces is probably unrivaled in the United States, as are our offerings of larimar, a rare and beautiful blue stone found exclusively in the Dominican Republic.

We hope you enjoy browsing through the hundreds of beautiful pieces on our website, and ask you to feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Thankyou,

The Bajoras Family
