Emerald (Be3Al2Si6O18) is the green variety of the mineral beryl. Emerald's green color results from trace chromium within the crystal. Several rich deposits of emeralds in Colombia were discovered and exploited after the Spanish Conquest of South America. In about 1830, emeralds were discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia. Some other notable localities include Austria, Norway, Brazil, Pakistan, Zambia, and North Carolina. After considerable effort, emerald was finally synthesized in 1937, rivaling natural emerald crystals in color and beauty.
In the 17th century, Anselmus de Boot, physician to the Holy Roman Emperor, recommended an amulet of emerald to prevent panic, cure fever, and stop bleeding. Unfortunately, emerald was also considered to be an enemy of sexual passion. In the 13th century, it is said that when King Bela of Hungary embraced his wife, his magnificent emerald broke into three pieces.
Emerald is the birthstone of May.
