VILLAGE SILVERSMITH
Charoite
Charoite (K(Ca,Na)2Si4O10(OH,F)*H2O) occurs primarily in dense fibrous aggregates, and its color ranges from pale lilac to deep purple. It is found where a syenite has intruded into and altered limestone deposits producing a potassium feldspar metasomatite. It is said to be opaque and unattractive in the field, a fact that may have attributed to its late recognition as a gemstone. It is also so unusual looking with its chatoyancy and strands of purple fibrous material that it is often mistaken for a synthetic stone.

Charoite was discovered in1978 in the Russian Murun Mountains in Yakutia, and was named after the Charo River in that region.
