Bloodstone (SiO2) is a dark green variety of chalcedony colored by traces of iron silicates and with patches of bright red jasper distributed throughout its mass. Modern sources of bloodstone include Brazil and Australia.
In the first century BC, bloodstone was believed to be a preserver of health, and offered protection against deception. In the Middle Ages in Europe is was used in sculptures representing martyrdom. It was believed to prevent nosebleeds, remove anger and discord, and to be a remedy for hemorrhage and inflammatory diseases.
The name is derived from the fact that both polished and unpolished stones show red spots on a dark green background, resembling drops of blood. Bloodstone is also known as heliotrope.
