Andalusite (Al2SiO5) is an aluminosilicate mineral. The variety known as chiastolite occurs as long prisms enclosing symmetrical wedges of carbonaceous material. Gem quality andalusite is found in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and gem gravels in Sri Lanka. The best chiastolite comes from Lancaster, Worcester, and Middlesex Cos., Massachusetts. Andalusite is used as a gemstone and in ceramics, particularly in the manufacture of spark plugs for its aluminum content.
Andalusite is named for the Spanish province of Andalusia. Chiastolite takes its name from the Greek chiastos, meaning "cross."
