Named after the Amazon River, amazonite (KAlSi3O8) is the blue-green variety of the feldspar mineral microline. Trace amounts of lead and water are responsible for the mineral's coloration. Gem-quality specimens are found in the Ural Mountains of Russia, Pikes Peak in Colorado, and in Minas Gerais Brazil.
Microcline derives its name from a combination of the Greek mikros, "small," and klinein, "to incline" in allusion to the planes of its two cleavage directions. Amazonite may sometimes also be referred to as amazonstone.
